Ontario childcare developments in the last few months have been so alarming, chaotic, and ill-informed they make your head spin. The assault on childcare began when the provincial government eliminated modest guidelines intended to temper rapid growth by profit-seeking childcare owners, then relaxed regulations to increase the ratio of children in private homes. Announced draconian cuts to childcare funding were temporarily reversed, however, when public and municipal outrage crossed party lines to wipe out most of the government's approval rating. Adding to the general migraine potential, the Ford government offered misinformation or downright fibs in response to objections. Indeed, the PC caucus' misstatements and double-speak have been downright Trumpian as they have served up bromides in response to concerns – whatever the evidence to the contrary.
